"Even if Jared had never asked me for this, even if Jared did not exist . . . Once this path occurred to me, I would have to proceed down it. I loved her that much.
No wonder the success rate for resistant hosts was so low here on Earth. Once we learned to love our human host, what hope did we souls have? We could not exist at the expense of one we loved. Not a soul. A soul could not live that way."
This quote comes at the point in the story where Wanderer has just decided to reveal the only thing that protects her race, the souls, from the humans. She is going to tell the human society how to remove the souls from the host bodies. If she does this, there is only one result that she could stand. Wanderer wants Doc, one of the humans, to take her out of Melanie, so that Mel can have her body and her life back. After living with the humans, she feels that living as a parasite is wrong, and is willing to commit suicide, with the help of others, to save the human race. Wanda knows that if the humans wanted to, they could kill all of the souls, but she believes that her friends wouldn't let that happen. If Wanda tells the humans this information, she could only be called a traitor. She feels that saving the humans is much more important that the souls, including her, staying on Earth. However, Wanda wouldn't be shipped off-planet like the other souls. She didn't want to be a parasite, and would die here on Earth for her beliefs.
